Virtual Reality experience of the lunar eclipse in 1715 at “chateau de Marly”

Marly castle is the second gem built by Louis XIV after Versailles. Located only 7km from it, the king would only allow a few privileged nobles to come along with him. The castle was demolished at the beginning of the nineteenth century.

The “musée promenade de Marly” commissioned Arforia and Aristeas to coproduce a VR experience that teleports the visitor in the year 1715 where the king witnesses a lunar eclipse from the castle of Marly. The story depicts a few hours previous the lunar eclipse. During the narration the user is teleported between reconstructed parts of the garden and castles like the octogonal castle, the king’s bedroom of the globe pavillion.

This VR experience features many 4D volumetric scans of real actors that impersonate the king, his servants or his astronomer Cassini. The VR installation is located inside the Musée of Marly inside a dedicated room where one can freely move around within the VR app and get closer to the 4D protagonists.
